The community is mourning the sudden and tragic loss of Kara A. Westphal, 45, of Deep River, who lost her life in a fatal single-vehicle crash early Monday morning in central Iowa.

According to the Iowa State Patrol, the crash occurred around 7:05 a.m. on January 5, 2026, along Iowa Highway 85 in Poweshiek County, northwest of Deep River. Kara was driving a 2005 Ford Escape westbound when her vehicle lost control on an icy curve. Troopers said the SUV left the roadway and rolled multiple times, coming to rest off the highway.

Kara was wearing her seat belt at the time of the crash, but despite safety measures, she suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene. No other vehicles were involved.
