North Carolina Man Charged After Allegedly Shooting at Car of Children Over “Ding-Dong Ditch”

A North Carolina man is facing serious criminal charges after authorities say he allegedly opened fire on a vehicle carrying several children who were playing the prank game commonly known as “ding-dong ditch” in his neighborhood.
According to law enforcement, deputies were already conducting a traffic stop in the area where Craig Steven Mason resides when they heard gunshots nearby. Officers responded immediately, arriving at the scene within approximately two minutes of the shots being fired.
Upon arrival, deputies reportedly discovered an unoccupied vehicle that showed apparent bullet holes and shattered glass, indicating it had been struck by gunfire. A short distance away, officers located a group of children in a nearby field. One of the children was found to have sustained a gunshot wound to the leg and was transported for medical treatment. The extent of the child’s injuries has not been publicly detailed.
The children told deputies they were driving through the neighborhood when an unknown individual fired multiple shots at their vehicle. As officers continued their investigation, a man allegedly approached them at the scene and identified himself as the shooter. Authorities say the man claimed the children had been playing “ding-dong ditch” at homes in the area, though he acknowledged that his own residence had not been targeted.
Investigators have not indicated that the children posed any threat or were armed at the time of the incident. Law enforcement emphasized that the response to a prank, regardless of how disruptive it may be, does not justify the use of deadly force.
Craig Steven Mason has since been charged with assault-related offenses in connection with the shooting. Additional charges could be considered as the investigation continues. Authorities have not released details about whether Mason remains in custody or if bond has been set.
The incident has raised renewed concerns about gun violence, community safety, and appropriate responses to non-violent behavior, particularly when minors are involved. Law enforcement officials urged residents to report disturbances through proper channels rather than taking matters into their own hands.
The case remains under investigation, and deputies say more information will be released as it becomes available.
